Interior Fit Out Brief

Canterbury College contacted Rap to revamp their campus café, which had become tired, drab and dated after years of use. In addition to modernising the café aesthetically, Rap were responsible for making it more functional for the catering students who work there.

Rap’s Interior Design Solution

Rap’s interior designers from Kent started by creating a 3D design, which proposed that the café adopt an industrial theme. With the edgy, urban aesthetic agreed, Rap set to transforming the space.

Given that exposed elements are a key part of industrial interior design, Rap introduced a brick effect wall using brick slips. The wall would be complimented by industrial-style dome pendant lights, which also would help to create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

For the serving area, Rap built a bespoke counter out of reclaimed palette wood for a visually arresting feature. Behind the counter, Rap implemented a number of elements to ensure the space was functional. These features included menu boards, storage solutions, suspended shelves, glossy splashback tiles, fridges and cleaning appliances.

To make the space hospitable for visiting students, Rap replaced the tired, miss-matched furniture with wooden-top dining tables and metal café chairs. For an alternative seating area, Rap fitted a breakfast bar against the brick-effect wall, which was accompanied by stools.

The interior fit out also entailed replacing the carpet with oak vinyl tile flooring and introducing a metal furring ceiling. The flooring would be easier for students to clean and maintain compared to the carpet, while the ceiling would provide better acoustics to reduce noise pollution in the college.

Thank You for Choosing Rap Interiors as Your Contractor

With the help of Rap Interiors, Canterbury College now has a café which is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. The functional elements will allow the students to develop their catering skills, while the stunning design will help to entice more students into the café.

We at Rap are delighted to have been chosen for this project, which will put the students on the path to a bright, successful future.

A Word with Gordon Temple, Canterbury College Support Team Member

What was the remit for the interior fit out?

“The café was in a bad state, so it needed a complete fit out from top to bottom. The students oversee everything from food prep to serving, so it also needed to be a functional space.”

Do you think the café will help students to develop their skills?

“Most definitely. While the kitchen will train them in prepping and cooking, the serving area and cafe will teach them about customer service and customer care.”

What is your favourite aspect of the design?

“I like the brick wall! The flooring is also very nice; it all ties in together. It is five thousand times better than the dated design we had before.”

What did it look like before?

“It was awful! It looked like a 1970s café with a shabby old carpet and miss-matched furniture.”

Would you recommend Rap Interiors?

“Absolutely – 100%! They’re excellent organisers. They let you know what’s going on. They’re always at the end of the phone. Having looked at Rap’s website we could see they had a good reputation, so it was an easy decision to choose them. I’m certain the college will have other upcoming projects where Rap will be used again!”

Do you feel like Rap has fulfilled your expectations?

“Definitely. The comments we’re getting from staff and students as they walk past are very positive, which says it all.”
