Robert May’s School is a coeducational secondary school with academy status, located in the village of Odiham, Hampshire, England.

Founded in 1694, Robert May’s has a long and rich history, and it is now a thriving comprehensive school that serves the local community. It is committed to providing its students with a high-quality education that will prepare them for success in the 21st century.

School Refurbishment Brief

Robert May’s contacted Rap Interiors to carry out their school refurbishment work in two areas of the school.

One part of the brief required us to transform a design technology block into a new student welfare area. This involved creating two enclosed offices, a medical room, a reception hatch, and a fully accessible washroom.
Robert May’s also wanted us to update its music room to make it more practical. This phase included the procurement of bespoke school furniture solutions and space planning to maximise the room’s potential.

Welfare Area Solution

Within the existing design technology block, we created two enclosed offices for the new student welfare area. One of these offices benefits from a new window, providing natural light and creating a bright, welcoming space for students seeking support. This addition also ensured compliance with building regulations.

Next, we adapted a set of existing washrooms to create a dedicated medical facility. This included the installation of a new sink, storage units, and a fully accessible washroom adhering to the government’s ‘Approved Document M’ accessibility standards.

In the entrance area, we created a sliding glass opening, which functions as a reception hatch leading into the main office. This is complemented by a new security shutter, providing the option to close off the hatch as required.

To lift the space, we painted the walls, ceilings, and existing orange beams in white. We also installed new carpet and flooring to complete the transformation and create a fresh, modern environment fitting for a welfare facility.

For the music room, Robert May’s required bespoke school furniture that could equip the children with a keyboard and monitor system during lessons. Our designers’ solution was to install desks with two shelves: one for the musical keyboard on top, and another for the computer keyboard, monitor, and mouse. This setup enables students to use the keyboard and software with the same compact space, making it ideal for digital music production.

To optimise the available space, we situated the desks around the perimeter of the classroom. This creates an expansive open plan layout that allows students to move around and experiment with other instruments.

The perimeter desking posed a challenge for our school interior design team due to the window alcoves. We overcame this by designing bespoke desks that fit seamlessly within these alcoves – a solution that was very well received by the client.

We also faced a challenge regarding the cable management to facilitate the setup. To address this, we installed grommets so the wires have a neat root from below the desk to the top. This also ensured there were no hanging or trailing wires that could cause a health and safety issue.
