Oakfield Preparatory School is an independent co-educational preparatory school for boys and girls aged two to 11 years old. It has been part of the fabric of Dulwich, London for over 130 years and blends traditional values with the best of modern curriculum.

School Interior Design Brief

Following a classroom refurbishment project in 2021, Oakfield needed our help again to carry out work in three areas: the library, nursery, and changing room. For the library, the school wanted us to make the learning experience more enjoyable for children by introducing a vibrant, fun design scheme. The same brief applied to the nursery, while the changing room required new storage and a shower facility.

Our Solution

Library

To make the library area more fun, we suggested incorporating a nature-inspired design that reflected the school’s logo and name (oak being part of Oakfield). As part of the design, we introduced a bespoke tree-shaped feature wall, which also functions as a bookshelf, low-level storage facility and seating area. Other key features of the nature theme are the “autumn sky” ceiling acoustics shaped like leaves and clouds, forest woodland furniture, and carpet tiles.

Further to the nature-inspired elements, we made a number of practical changes to the library. Gone are the old bookshelves, and in their place we introduced large, portable units for greater flexibility. We also made significant improvements at high level by implementing a safety mesh net, hidden by a new suspended ceiling.

Additionally, the children now have access to balance cones, which help with the development of posture and balance. Teachers can set out a course and create challenges for children to compete in, making for a fun confidence builder.

Nursery Area

The nursery section comprises two areas: an arts and crafts room and a chill room.

First came the arts and crafts room, where we introduced a creative workstation with compartments for pencils, paints and other materials. Next to this, we rotated an existing sink and created a new splashback so that the children have a dedicated area to mix paints and clean their utensils.

For a more engaging and practical learning experience, our designers also installed a large multifunctional table. With reconfigurable units, students can use it as a writing station, drawing table or performance stage, helping inspire the actors of tomorrow! Combined with the durable LVT wood, the space now has a new, improved look and improved functionality.

Likewise, in the chill zone, we installed a number of new elements to improve its functionality and the design. The new features include durable carpet planks, book display units, a bespoke storage wall with high gloss white board fronts, and a second storage unit with bird shaped coat pegs to continue the nature theme.

Changing Space

A key part of the new changing space design is the children’s shower facility. Despite only having a small area to work within, we were able to integrate an open shower unit with small children-sized steps and a fold down seat.

Furthermore, we created more storage space by installing a high-level cupboard and low-level seat with drawers. These have helped to free up space in other areas of the school, making for a practical addition.

The Result

With the help of our design and project team, Oakfield has made significant improvements to its school. The new furniture elements, aesthetic changes and storage solutions have had a positive impact on both the learning and teaching experience, which will undoubtedly lead to great success for the school in the ensuing years.

We would like to say thank you to Oakfield Preparatory School for choosing us to work with them for a second time. It has been a pleasure on both occasions and we are delighted to have helped the school to achieve its interior design ambitions.
